To help you understand your dentist, Dr. Robert H. Watson, and dental team a little bit more when you come into our dental practice for your appointments, we have provided the definitions to the following common dental terms:

Dental filling: A dental filling is a restoration that is needed when tooth decay has attacked and damaged your tooth. The filling fills the tooth after it has been cleaned, and it restores your oral health. There are different types of fillings available, including silver amalgam and composite resin fillings, and they all help you in different ways.

Dental crown: A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is needed when your tooth is broken, worn down, decayed, discolored, or fractured. This cap covers the entire surface of your tooth and looks completely natural.

Dental bridge: A dental bridge is a restoration that is used to replace your missing teeth. The bridge is made of two dental crowns and one or more false teeth. The bridge is placed in the gap in your smile and is anchored to the remaining natural teeth that lie on both sides.

Tooth decay: Tooth decay is a common but serious dental issue that attacks your teeth and creates cavities. This issue typically develops when you have poor oral hygiene, consume too much sugar, or leave the plaque on your smile untreated. It’s best to eliminate tooth decay from your tooth as soon as possible; otherwise, tooth extraction will be necessary.

Gum disease: Gum disease is a dangerous dental issue that develops when the plaque on your teeth continues to grow and bother your gums. As time passes, the plaque turns into tartar, moves below the gumline, and deteriorates your jaw bone. This could then result in loose and lost teeth. It’s best to prevent this disease at all costs.
